"A Kantha blanket - I'll treat myself to that."
We love Kantha blankets because they tell a beautiful story of craftsmanship, tradition and upcycling in its most beautiful form.
Traditionally, Kantha blankets are made in rural areas of West Bengal. Several layers of recycled fabrics, such as used saris, are sewn together using a special embroidery stitch called "Kantha". "Kantha" comes from the Bengali language and means quilted or sewn. The art of "Kantha" embroidery is passed down from generation to generation and is an important part of the cultural tradition in the Indian community. Due to the density of the weave of the various quilted layers of fabric, the Kanthas can be used as blankets, bedspreads, picnic blankets, or wall hangings.
We have searched for the most beautiful vintage kanthas for you. We clean them and our hand embroiderers lovingly patch and decorate any small holes and stains. This way, the unique kanthas can remain in circulation and bring joy for many years to come.
